Project Overview

Competitive shooting among law enforcement officers is a growing trend in the US. One reason for this is; officers are beginning to see the training value, and the edge competitive shooting lends to their firearms proficiency as professional peace officers. In response to this growing interest among officers in competitive shooting, peace officer associations around the country have started hosting law enforcement only matches. The Utah Peace Officer Association started hosting a national event last year in addition to its UPOA multi-gun match. (This is only the second year of the Law Enforcement Multi-Gun National Championship). I have been asked to head up the marketing efforts for the national match which was held November 3rd and 4th. As marketing director I had two main responsibilities. The first is to promote the match to current and retired law enforcement personnel as participants. The second responsibility was to market the match to potential corporate sponsors. Sponsorship is what makes the match possible. This forum gives sponsors an opportunity to advertise and demo their law enforcement related products to officers from all over the US.

My main responsibility in this project was to market the match to both potential sponsors and to officers. The aim has been to establish the match (this is only it's second year) as an event where law enforcement officers from all over the country will want to come shoot together, to build commendatory, and to hone their tactical shooting skills. We also aim to give vendors of law enforcement related gear a venue where they can showcase their products, and get build their brand recognition.

The first thing I did for the project was to message potential sponsors, make them aware of the match and solicit support. I also created a match flyer advertising the event to officers and had that sent out to departments throughout the nation via law enforcement email lists. We haven't had a logo for the match so I used some graphic design software to create one.

Once we had confirmed sponsors, I created social media ads to show case them on our Facebook page. I also created a slide show video where I cut together shooting scenes from past matches with the logos of our match sponsors. The video is below, it went up on our Facebook page as well. Above are some sample of the ads I made for sponsors as well as the flyer and logo.

Reflections

This project went well in some aspects but not as well as I had hoped in others. I had hoped that I could get sponsors to sign on quickly and send in items for the prize table right away. The reality was that the timeline I had envisioned wasn't the one that happened. I did have some big sponsors sign on right away and commit to have a presence at the match. Others said they were interested, but because of budgets and other advertising commitments didn't follow through, still others waited until the week before the match to sign on.

I had a goal of 10 sponsors, which we met, and they have been great. Our prize table was impressive! Double Tap Ammunition put over $5000 dollars worth of ammo on the prize table, enough that every officer who came to shoot won some ammo. Modern Warriors put an FN .40 caliber handgun on the table, Adamson Police Products, in conjunction with Burris Optics and Trijicon Optics donated some high dollar sighting systems. These are just a few examples of how wonderfully generous our sponsors were.

The Officers who came to shoot had a great time, and the feed back I got was all positive. The response to the ads and the video I made have been incredible. This is the largest LEO only multi-gun match anywhere. We opened the match up to a maximum of 100 shooters and only had 22 empty spots. A two day event is a lot of work, but it was an enjoyable, successful match. Considering this is only our second year running it I am very pleased with the prestige it has garnered already.

About Me

About the Match

The Utah Peace Officer Associations has conducted a championship multi-gun match for UPOA members since 2014. It is the largest Officer-Only, multi-gun match in the nation. Starting in 2016 the UPOA began hosting a law enforcement multi-gun championship match for certified and retired officers from all around the nation. This will be the second year of the Law Enforcement Multi-Gun National Championships, and we expect this year's national match to be bigger than the UPOA match!

I am a farm kid from the high desert of Southern Utah. I retired from law enforcement after 10 years of public service to pursue a degree in Business Management at Southern Utah University. I will graduate in December 2017 with a Bachelors Degree in Management and will also attain a certificate in International Business and Marketing.

In my spare time I enjoy outdoor activities of all sorts, but most of all Jeeping and competitive shooting.

The 2017 Law Enforcement Multi-Gun National Championship is over and in the books. It involved 78 LEO shooters from all over the US, 10 excellent sponsors, and a small army of volunteers. After two days of intense individual and team shooting stages the results are in. The top finishers in the Patrol Division were 1st place: Devin Lauretzen, Iron County Utah SO; 2nd place: Brady Argyle, Washington City Utah PD; and 3rd place: Dave Seely; US Immigration and Customs Officer.  The Practical Division winners were 1st place: John Mouret, Arizona DPS; 2nd place: Greg Severson, Sandy Utah PD; and 3rd place: Jeremy Dunn, Enoch Utah PD. The Salt Lake City Utah PD grabbed high agency honors, while Team DoubleTap won the team match in the practical division, and Team "Shocker 2.1" (made up mostly of Federal Law Enforcement Officers) topped the team match in the patrol division..
